The Yeti ARC Carbon Frame isn"t another uniform 29er. It is a technology driven, race-ready hardtail that also uses 27.5in wheels for Small and X-Small variants. Yeti"s notorious for doing things right, and the fact they"ve designed the ARC with rubber proportional to frame size, is case in point. The idea of X-Large frames rolling on 26ers or X-Smalls on 29ers is quite skewed when a little logic is applied. Yet, manufacturers, remarkably, still insist on offering those options. When different diameter wheels are applied to a proportionately sized chassis, packaging and construction is much more natural -- and ride characteristics are enhanced for the end user. A quick look at the geometry difference between the 27.5 and 29 ARC brings this to light. The ARC"s geometry is nearly identical to the Big Top, not surprising given the expertise of Yeti and development of that frame, but there was never a Small or X-Small Big Top option. Yeti saw the issues with packing 29in wheels in compact frames and smartly stayed away. The Small and X-Small ARCs, on the other hand, enjoy the benefit of shorter chainstays, along with a lower bottom bracket and standover height thanks to the mid-wheel option. While this is great news to anyone who fits the X-Small and Small ARC Carbons, there"s much more going on here to warrant the coveted, heritage-rich ARC nomenclature. Born during the lightweight trend of the early nineties, ARC stood for Alloy Racing Composite, and the frames were constructed from aluminum Easton tubing. Carrying on that tradition, this ARC drops nearly a pound and a half from the Big Top by employing Yeti"s extensive carbon proficiency. This is Yeti"s first full-monocoque carbon hardtail, but it"s far from Yeti"s first dance with the black weave. From carbon pivots to full frames, Yeti"s stable has had some form of carbon fiber for the better half of a decade.
